Chanel

Culture Chanel

My role: Art Director
Designer: Nolan Cabeje

Chanel, one of the worlds most renowned and famous luxury brands, has a storied history. Less known to the public is the eponymous founders connection to some of the early 20th centuries greatest artists: Picasso, Modigliani, and Buñuel. Each year the Patrimone department of Chanel holds an exhibit showcasing CoCos relationship to these various artists through their work and her own designs.

In 2013, the exhibit was organized around a series of themes that expressed the feeling of the works by Picasso and other contemporaries and how they influenced Chanel's works. The site had to reflect and mirror the physical exhibition organization, all while being translated effectively into French and Chinese. This was done by organizing the site around the same themes, of the exhibit itself, with built in functionality that allowed visitors to collect and tag works of art to add to a page of their own creation that they could tweet, share, email, or print.

Additional complexity was added by the exhibits location in China; the site had to be translated into Chinese and designed without prior knowledge of the proper titles of some works of art.

As art naming conventions are quite rigid, this required an agile approach to the design of certain areas of the site as we received information. I worked side by side with our engineers to ensure that the integrity of the art titles and information was upheld across the multiple translations and social media interactions.
